The Builders, a chapter of the AGC selects new president
Lance A. Claiborne succeeds Don Greenwell

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The Builders, a chapter of the AGC, announces that Lance A. Claiborne has been selected to serve as new President of the 650-member organization with a 25,000-employee base beginning Oct. 2, 2023. Claiborne will be the first African American to be president of the staff team.

Claiborne will be joining The Builders from INTECH Construction in Philadelphia, PA where he was Director of Diversity Relations. His career has included serving as Director of Industry Relations for the General Building Contractors Association, and Zoning Officer/Current Planner for the City of Harrisburg. He brings his experience in the construction industry, and expertise in government relations and project management.

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a B.A. in Architecture, Claiborne has also completed graduate coursework in Urban Design and Public Policy. Among honors, he was selected Association Leading Lobbyist of the Year by Association TRENDS, was a board member of the PA Legislative Black Caucus Foundation and award recipient of the 2022 City and State PA Construction Power List 75.

“The Builders aspires to improve the lives of people through construction through careers but also the build environment for the community at large,” said Don Greenwell who retires at the end of 2023. “We’re very excited about Lance Claiborne…the time for this association for Lance is now. His energy and expertise are exactly what the search committee was looking for.”

The eight-member national search committee was led by Rob Cleavinger, immediate past board chair for The Builders/AGC, and Senior Vice President/Regional Director of Construction Operations for JE Dunn Construction.

“Everyone on the search committee determined the role and qualities needed in a new president,” Cleavinger explained. “Lance Claiborne has a very mature executive leadership presence and a nice blend of experience in our industry. As a leader in the construction business, we need to show our membership that diversity, equity and inclusion is alive and well.”

“The Builders has a rich history of outstanding leadership, propelling the industry to its current heights. Don Greenwell, the Board of Directors, and our Builders team rank among the very best AGC chapters nationwide,” Claiborne said. “I’ve long admired their innovative work, both locally and nationally. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with this exceptional team and our partners to further fuel regional growth.”

Claiborne added, “I’m excited to explore the vibrant communities within The Builder’s footprint across the heartland. Our Association boasts strong partnerships in the building industry and nurturing and expanding these relationships will be key to our success. This is an exciting moment for our industry. While construction has deep roots, there is still room for sustained impact.”
